Assignment: Create a work, written, animated, drawn, 3D models, etc… that communicates your field research in an absurdist fashion post task/reflection

This week we were asked to conduct field research noting how many contact points with electricity from waking up to going to bed that I made. Afterwards, I was asked to create a creative, but absurd way of communicating my data. I came up with three absurd ways to showcase the number of touchpoints I made with electricity on Feb 11th.

[1] Since I listed all the electrical contact points I was making throughout the day, I decided to create an audio-only experience to listen to my contact points. It’s a bit absurd since I utilised my voice saying each touchpoint then I pieced them together to string my day. I tried to go for the same tone of voice with each word so it almost seemed dystopic.

[2] After that version, I started wondering what it would sound like to put in order the electrical contact points I had and see if just by listening one could hear which contact point I interacted with the most.

[3] The last way that I tried to present my research in an absurd way is by trying to say all the contact points as quickly as I can in the order it happened. I wanted it to convey the overload I saw in my day of certain contact points like my phone, AirPods, Alexa and laptop. It was unintentionally and actually absurd when Alexa picked up when I said her name and actually repeated the order of some of my contact points…”LIGHT, PHONE, AC, ALEXA, ALEXA, PHONE, CHARGER…”

Overall this assignment taught me that form is as important to absurdism as the content. I’m glad I tried something only audio-based and really took a chance on hinting at the absurdity in relation to electricity in my daily life. I think each audio project had a different end effect and I’m appreciating the chance to work on storytelling + the absurd through different mediums.
